Colorado may have a booming beer industry, but the reality is that the state does not grow enough hops.
In an effort to create a beer made from all-homegrown hops, AC Golden Brewing invited its Facebook fans last Fall to accept a free hops rhizome and donate the harvested plant back to the company a year later. By doing so, AC Golden would be able to take its 99.89 percent local beer and make it 100 percent local.
The brewing company received an enthusiastic response and gave out 509 rhizomes. Unfortunately, many of these withered and died under the watch of participants. However, AC Golden received a large enough harvest (56 pounds) to make a good bit of their beer 100 percent local. Keep an eye out for the bottles with the March 2012 date on them.
The response for upcoming years is expected to be even better. Those that participated this year are proud to be a part of something that strives to be as local as possible. Read more about AC Golden’s effort at Denver Post.
